Unified Tool for Cylinder Pressure Analysis and Combustion Prediction
GT-POWER contains sophisticated capabilities in the area of measured cylinder pressure analysis. These capabilities are a critical bridge between engine test and simulation activities, filling a gap that has long existed between these groups.
Engine simulations often utilize measured burn rates or heat release rates as part of their in-cylinder combustion models. Historically, these burn rates were computed with one set of modeling assumptions within the test departments, then handed off to the simulation group for use in their engine models where a different set of modeling assumptions were used. By using GT-POWER's built in cylinder pressure analysis capabilities, all burn rate analysis is accomplished directly within GT-POWER. The burn rates computed and later utilized in the engine model are thus established using identical methodologies, providing for perfect consistency between the measured data and the simulation.

GT-POWER employs a sophisticated technique known as three pressure analysis (TPA) to perform the burn rate analysis. In this technique, measured instantaneous intake and exhaust pressures (if available) are used in conjunction with the measured cylinder pressure to determine not only burn rates, but to also compute the exact contents of the cylinder (air flow, residual content, fuel quantity) at the start of combustion. This simulation based method of determining combustion rates thus eliminates much of the guesswork that previously had existed surrounding the conditions in the cylinder at the start of combustion that existed due to the inability to measure particular quantities such as trapped residual content at IVC. As such, TPA is a valuable tool that can also be used within the test departments to act as a "virtual sensor" for measuring quantities that couldn't otherwise be measured.
